Various articles have arrived in the first part of August, and as puzzle-pieces, they begin to fit together. First is from Anna Chen, an excellent writer and analyst in the UK, who had a great article this week: To save the planet, first we had to destroy it - The military machine is a major polluter so why is the West turning to war and away from public necessity? | ANNA CHEN | AUG 03, 2026 - "We could have stuck to ploughshares instead of swords in a peaceful and prosperous world. But, thanks to the elites, the only bright future we're likely to see is the red glow of advancing flames and the flash of their nuclear toys."
Trying to be concise, I left this comment: "The first problem the "Leaders" had with democracy was garnering enough power to actually govern. Then, succeeding in that, they figured out how to expand that power to be able to ignore the mugs that elect them. Where, exactly, is the fault in the system?"
Well, that really steps in it, doesn't it? Take a deep breath - we're going deep here. A whole bunch of pieces clicked together this week. Monday, August 10th, the Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister, Anita Anand, issued more sanctions, this time against Streit Group and Guerman Goutorov for selling armoured vehicles to Russia. She said "With a history of supporting Russia's military-industrial complex by supplying Russian entities with defence products, Streit Group continues to feed Russia's war machine and the Putin regime's unprovoked and unjustifiable war against Ukraine."
No country's "sanctions" are valid without support of a Security Council resolution. It's beyond belief that a supposed normative nation would issue such a statement that totally ignores the history of the Ukraine situation. These Elites, trying to deeply align with corresponding European Elites, have repeated this nonsense so often that they fully believe it. And, of course, to mollify the large Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. They truly believe that Russia is The Enemy, putting the two largest nations in the Northern Hemisphere and sharing the Arctic Ocean, at loggerheads for no rational reason. This Eurocentric approach has gone so far that the neo-conservative Canadian Prime Minister now vacations in Europe. These are perfect examples of how these Elites in Europe and now in Canada float free in their own mental space, working up their economies to prepare for their dream of war.
The Foreign Minister is supposedly in charge of diplomatic efforts, nicht wahr? Yet diplomacy depends on respect between the parties - while if one party seeks the total elimination of the other as these Elites do, there is nothing to discuss. In the new Mecca Accord between Pakistan, Türkiye and KSA, as well as in the Putin/Xi accord, the world is moving toward "collective security" in place of the difficult European term of "indivisible security," meaning nations work together with mutual respect, from which comes regarding trust, allowing meaningful dialogue to solve any issues without resorting to war. This is in contrast to the American version of absolute security, an international version of Simon Says.
This type of elitist governance leads toward war instead of toward peace. In the August 13th Globe and Mail, Bob Rae, former UN Ambassador, In an article "Canada must not withdraw from peacekeeping," warned of the interlocked mindset between Canadian Forces and the Pentagon resulting funding moving away from previous peacekeeping missions to the growing NATOist war effort against Russia and China.
And there is ever less The People can do about it with the growing trend toward unitary-executive power, as outlined in Adam Dodek's article on the same day, "He could happen here," referring, of course to the fool occupying the White House. In fact, as the author illustrates, and as we have witnessed, it is much easier in Canada than in almost any other so-called democracy to obtain limitless power. Then we end up with the entire country being shunted off the rails into the unknown, this time, it seems, into yet another glorified version of the past, regarding war and fossil fuels production.
These outcomes are well-described in Tzeporah Berman's article, also on that same day, titled "Betting on the past," about the coming new oil pipeline to the west coast from Alberta, to ship out more tar sands bitumen for export income into a world that is trying to get off fossil fuels. This type of project, once mentioned, is no longer possible to stop - the proponents are beyond reasoning. Of course, it will terminate at a port which is totally incompatible with sea-level rise.
Such lousy governance ties right in to Sean @lifes2hard's comment: "Industrial civilization is locked into growth by political ideology, corporate power, infrastructural path dependency, and thermodynamic constraints, making transformative climate mitigation structurally infeasible rather than merely politically delayed." (in reference to Professor Tim Benton). And further comment - "What gives Tim Benton hope? - Nothing does. Collapse of agriculture and the other systems is unavoidable. He explains why that is so (see link)."

[Links added] So there, in that rather shabby office tower, you have deep israeli influence and lobbying coming in to affect Canada's military industry and surveillance of the population.
Can The People regain any power, and how did it all devolve to the State? Professor Einar Tangen speaks to this in Technofeudalism - Those Who Would Be Our Masters | EINAR TANGEN | AUG 10, 2026 *#8211; "what happens when some of America's most powerful technocrats decide democracy is an impediment to their vision and profits?" He concludes with "It is increasingly about whether the people or the elites will remain the ultimate source of political authority." I had a little comment for that: "'The People' lost political authority when politics became a spectator sport. And they lost agency by being so shut in by debt that they can't participate in community affairs."
Underlying this social malaise is the demise of education, well describe in an article from Ismaele, by Graciela Beatriz Oubiña, titled The twilight of education? - the collapse of scholarly achievement "was the reflection of a civilisation weary of itself." Then I left a comment: "'Hey, teacher, leave them kids alone' - 'We don't need no edjucashun' - The crass celebration of Ignorance is one of the direct causes of the failure of 'democracy' and the rise of despotism."
Yet it's mainly the belligerent nations of The West which have fallen into this state of decay, which may be fueling their contempt for the successful parts of the world. "And [this] autumn, when the March fertilizer crisis becomes a food price spike it will converge with an energy repricing event. The spring will release." This could explain why the war on Iran just keeps dragging on - China is the target - Iran should figure out how they are being terribly exploited. Perkins' thesis explains why not only the war keeps being extended, but also why the price of oil and gas are kept low until it is time to spring the trap.
